Blog Seven - Sebastiào Salgado
Sebastiào Salgado is best known for his work in the documentary photography and photojournalist genre of photography. Salgado was born in Brazil in 1944. Salgado went to school to become an economist which led him to travel to the World Bank in Africa frequently. These trips to Africa is where Salgado began taking pictures seriously and eventually began as a full time photographer.
Salgado initially worked for different companies where he would submit his photos. Examples being Sigma, Gamma, and Magnum Photos. However in 1994, Salgado and his wife started their own photo agency. The work in his agency is noted for taking photos of workers in less developed nations.
This photo is a great example of what Salgado does best. The overall darkness of the photo matches perfectly what is seen by the viewer. The man looking into the camera looks tired and weak. The ladders play a key role in how the photo is viewed too almost like these people are at rock bottom and trying to climb their way out. All the other people on the ladders have their heads down and nobody looks excited to be there at all. This photo shows viewers in more developed countries that many things we take for granted and we must sit back sometimes and be thankful for all that we have access to.
