By referring to Marvin Heiferman’s essay, Photography changes Everything, articulate what photography means to you.

Photography has multiple meanings to me when I think of it. The main aspects can be categorized into two main ideas that often intertwine with one another throughout my thinking process and in the essay. My first idea when I think of photography is the idea that photography catches moments in time when people are experiencing specific things. This thing they experience can be anything from a home run at a baseball game or a fish jumping out of the water. This idea can be found in the essay toward the beginning when Heiferman says "To see and experience the world, we don't only look at images; we take them, and often. Last year, it was reported that Facebook's 750 million users uploaded and shared 100 million photos every day." 100 million experiences are captured by individuals on Facebook alone. With these experiences people in the future will have the ability to look back and have the ability to share an experience from the past with someone who was actually there to take the picture.

This leads into my second idea that comes to mind when I think of photography. When I think of photography I think of how important to me it is to document things that are important or need to remember. I play baseball so I rely on photography to make sure my form is correct when I swing the bat or throw the ball. I can use photos to see the competition to get an idea of the weaknesses of my opponent. The idea of using photography to document goes deeper however. as Heiferman mentions in the article, "photography has mapped out the inside of our bodies, the ocean's floor, the topography of Mars, and confirmed the existence of black holes millions of light years further out in the universe." This ideas aligns with what one of my ideas is which is that photography documents. Being able to document places or things that a person cannot see in the present day is what makes photography unique.

Photography is a unique invention that has evolved over time into what we know now. Each person can view photography with a different perspective based off their upbringing. Not only is it important that people can view pictures but the fact that anyone can capture a moment in time and be able to document things that the human eye cannot see or access with our current technology. Photography is arguably one of the most important tools that humans have at their disposal.
