Blog Nine - Bob Martin

Image
Bob Martin is a British sports photographer best known for his action shots that capture the drama and beauty of athletics. Martin is recognized mostly for his photos that pause time and show athletes flying through the air or performing a surreal athletic move. Many times Martin uses remote control cameras to capture perspectives and angles that cannot be accessed through traditional photography. One of my favorite photos taken by Martin is of a diver competing in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. This shot is a great example of What Martin does best. The timing if the shot, the position of the athlete, and the backdrop of nothing but the sky makes this photo seem impossible. Martin's creative thinking and use of camera position and angle is what makes this picture interesting.

Blog Eight - Mary Ellen Mark

Image
Mary Ellen Mark was born in 1940 and was best known for her portraiture and documentary photography. Her portraits often focused on those who were on the outside of society doing everything they could to make it day to day. Her style of photography was often recognized for the authenticity and rawness that could be portrayed through the photos.  The authenticity of her photos caught the attention of famous magazines including Time and the Rolling Stone. While much of her time was spent on magazine and professional work, she made time to produce photo books on her own. One of her most popular works called streetwise contains arguably some of her best work.  This book is described by Mark as " An intimate portrait of teenagers who survive as pimps, prostitutes, panhandlers and small-time drug dealers living on the streets of Seattle." One of my favorite pictures in the book is on the cover.  The cover shows a young lady dressed in all black with a veil over ...

Blog Seven - Sebastiào Salgado

Image
Sebastiào Salgado is best known for his work in the documentary photography and photojournalist genre of photography. Salgado was born in Brazil in 1944. Salgado went to school to become an economist which led him to travel to the World Bank in Africa frequently. These trips to Africa is where Salgado began taking pictures seriously and eventually began as a full time photographer. Salgado initially worked for different companies where he would submit his photos. Examples being  Sigma, Gamma, and Magnum Photos. However in 1994, Salgado and his wife started their own photo agency. The work in his agency is noted for taking photos of workers in less developed nations. This photo is a great example of what Salgado does best. The overall darkness of the photo matches perfectly what is seen by the viewer. The man looking into the camera looks tired and weak. The ladders play a key role in how the photo is viewed too almost like these people are at rock bottom and trying to climb...

Blog Four - Micheal Kenna

Image
Micheal Kenna was made popular for his landscape and minimalist photography. Minimalist photography includes extreme simplicity in photos. Kenna took advantage of long exposure times to capture high levels of light. Kenna also took photos early in the morning or at dusk to ensure he had optimal levels of light. The light levels during this time of day in conjunction with long exposures helped soften the texture of water and clouds. Kenna's photography of landscapes often look dream like. Kenna used black and white cameras and made use of shadows and light to create numerous shades of grey in his photos. Often Kenna used very simple landscapes and used his strategies to create his photos. Kenna points out the idea that photography forces viewers to see their environment in different ways.     Kenna's photography is inspired by the traditional Japanese aesthetics. Kenna was also inspired by other 20th century photographers like  Alfred Stieglitz and Bill...
