Arnold Newman was best known for his works in the environmental portraiture genre of photography. Newman was born on March 3rd, 1918 in New York City. His family moved during his childhood. He was raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey and Miami Beach Florida. Newman went to college at the University of Miami, Coral Gables and studied art. Newman began his photography career in 1938 making portraits for several companies in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and West Palm Beach. In June of 1941, the Museum of Modern Art took notice of Newman's work and gave him the opportunity to exhibit his work. This moment was when Newman began to push the limits creating his version of experimental portraiture. in 1945 his exhibit in Philadelphia called "Artists Look Like This" received the attention of the nation.
